Amazon Photography 101

In the old age of brick and mortar, before Amazon hit the market, brands had people dedicated to walking in retail spaces to make sure their product was positioned on the right shelf and within reach of the customer. In an age where shelves don’t exist anymore, and we cannot control where on the web page the product will appear, brands need to put even more attention on first impressions. By first impressions, I mean product photos.

One element that marketers are in control of is the image that customers see when searching for products on the Amazon marketplace. It is crucial that each image follows Amazon guidelines. However, to capture customer’s attention, brands need to go the extra mile.

Keep in mind:

  • First, the image needs to follow Amazon’s guidelines.  It is essential that the main image is on a white background, without any props. The image cannot contain any additional information or copy. In this case, it is essential to play by the rules, as Amazon is trying to offer a consistent and clean customer experience.

  • It is crucial to optimize all images, especially the main one, for mobile visualization. More and more customers use smartphones to shop online, and brands need to make sure that all photos are still easily readable when on mobile.

  • Use all the slots! Products have eight slots available for images on desktop, and 6 for mobile. Because most guidelines apply only for the main image, the rest of the photos can creatively show the product in use and outside the packaging. Another thing to consider is using lifestyle images. Showing people interacting with the product can be especially impacting on eCommerce, where there is already minimal human contact.

  • With using more pictures, it also comes the opportunity to incorporate text in the photos. This is a great moment to use the existing copy and highlight certain features of the product. This also offers the opportunity to engage in storytelling, which many brands miss out on when selling online.

  • Lastly, image size is essential. Images should be small enough to be quickly loaded by a mobile internet connection, but big enough to show the product without blur.

Images are the best way to leave a good impression on the customer. On Amazon, where the battle to be on the first page of search is never ending, good photography can help brands stand out.
